The Determinants of Birth Interval in Ahvaz-Iran: A Graphical Chain Modelling Approach

Abstract: Birth interval is a major determinant of the rates of fertility. In this paper a graphical modelling approach is used to study the effect of different socio-economic factors on birth intervals of children in Ahvaz-Iran. This approach provides an easily interpretable empirical description and illustrates explicitly the conditional independence structure between each pair of variables. The interpretation can be read directly from a mathematical graph. Besides examining the direct association of each determinant … Show more

“…As found in this study, the odds of having short birth interval were higher among the mothers who had not used modern contraceptives before conception of the last child compared to those who had used it. This finding is supported by the studies conducted in Egypt ( 41 ), Ahvaz, Iran ( 52 ), Jordan ( 39 ), and Tigray, Ethiopia ( 26 ), which revealed that the odds of having short birth interval were higher among mothers who did not use modern contraceptives before getting pregnant with the last child than those who used. The purpose of the contraceptive method is either to limit or space births.…”

“…The analysis included 79,787 women who had their first birth after marriage (90.9%) or had no births after marriage (9.1%). The first birth interval has been grouped into three categories: before 18 months, 18–35 months, and 36 months or above ( 10 ).…”

“…Early pregnancy elongates the woman’s reproductive lifespan compared to equally fertile women who have children later ( 8 ). Women’s educational attainment was found to substantially influence the interval between marriage to first birth, with those with low or no educational attainment giving birth more soon than others ( 9 , 10 ). Respondents’ rural-urban location differences also influenced the first birth interval; the interval in rural areas where marriage occurs at young ages is higher than in urban areas (Kumar & Danabalan, 2006).…”

“…Some studies have demonstrated that the duration of FBI influences social and cultural factors and the childbearing pattern of a family (Trussell and Menken, 1978;Nath et al, 1999). Fertility pattern also depends on the age at first marriage of women and men (Rasekh and Momtaz, 2021). Getting married at an older age is also more likely to shorten the duration of first birth.…”
