The Design of Nanostructured Metronidazole-Loaded HPC/Oxide Xerogel Composites: Influence of the Formulation Parameters on In Vitro Characterisation

Abstract: Abstract. In this study, oxide and polymer/oxide xerogels with metronidazole were prepared and examined as carriers of drug for the local application to the bone. The nanoporous SiO 2 -CaO-P 2 O 5 and HPCSiO 2 -CaO-P 2 O 5 xerogel materials with different amounts of the polymer [hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC)] were prepared using the sol-gel technology, and their physicochemical properties were characterised with respect to chemical structure [by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR)], porosity and the… Show more

“…For the release of metronidazole, silica, silica/polydimethylsiloxane and silica/ polydimethylsiloxane/calcium cryogels were examined as polymeric carriers [37]. Nano-porous SiO2-CaO-P205 and HPC-SiO2-CaO-P2O5 xerogeller were prepared for the release of metronidazole [38]. POSS-based carrier systems that can offer high efficiency with low drug dosage have been developed by Karaca Açarı et al [39].…”

“…For the release of metronidazole, silica, silica/polydimethylsiloxane and silica/ polydimethylsiloxane/calcium cryogels were examined as polymeric carriers [ 37 ]. Nanoporous SiO 2 -CaO-P 2 0 5 and HPC-SiO 2 -CaO-P 2 O 5 xerogels were prepared for the release of metronidazole [ 38 ]. In this study, POSS-based antibacterial film synthesis was carried out, especially for biomedical surface coating areas.…”

“…It should be mentioned that the PH‐S2 sample was not considered for release study, due to its low elastic modulus and compression strength. Investigation of loading solutions of metronidazole by UV spectroscopy at a wavelength of 320 nm showed that the loading contents of the drug were 28.65%, 31.32%, and 45.3% for PH‐C6, PH‐S6, and PH‐S10, respectively. These results show that the loading capacities of the hydrogels were in complete agreement with their corresponding equilibrium swelling ratios (Figures and C).…”

“…The choice of the aforementioned substances is dictated by our earlier results of the dissolution of the gel of the oxide carrier (15,16). We found that due to the construction and interaction with the matrix oxide, ChD was released much slower than MT.…”

“…In addition to this, granulated material results in reduced dustiness and sustained drug release (14). Therefore, in this study, we selected ethyl cellulose (EC) as the binding agent due to its widespread use as a binder in wet granulation and the use of cellulose derivatives as components of bioactive materials (15).…”
