The Design of Focus Area Maturity Models

Abstract: Abstract. Maturity models are a well-known instrument to support the improvement of functional domains in IS, like software development or testing. In this paper we present a generic method for developing focus area maturity models based on both extensive industrial experience and scientific investigation. Focus area maturity models are distinguished from fixed-level maturity models, like CMM, in that they are especially suited to the incremental improvement of functional domains.

“…Thereby, our model would serve all three typical purposes for the creation and use of maturity models, as illustrated by [6]. It would be of particular interest at this point, not only to display maturity, but also to moreover operationalize and quantify it, for instance through the use of assessment questions [37]. Admittedly, our rather descriptive model has for now some remaining deficits regarding the impartial measurement of the current maturity level of a particular company.…”

“…In recent years, efforts to generalize the MM development process aiming at a theoretically sound and replicable MM design have been made (see [18,[61][62][63]). The proposed guidelines for MM development include a problem identification phase in which purpose and scope of the model are determined, a model development phase in which model and assessment instruments are defined, and an implementation and validation phase in which the model is evaluated based on empirical cases.…”
