The Design of a Resource-Aware Reflective Middleware Architecture

Abstract: Abstract. Middleware has emerged as an important architectural component in supporting distributed applications. With the expanding role of middleware, however, a number of problems are emerging. Most significantly, it is becoming difficult for a single solution to meet the requirements of a range of application domains. Hence, the paper argues that the next generation of middleware platforms should be both configurable and re-configurable. Furthermore, it is claimed that reflection offers a principled means o… Show more

“…The paper analyzes, compares and consolidates past research work. One of the first approaches is in [19] that presents an architecture for reflective middleware based on a multimodel approach. Through a number of working examples, they demonstrate that the approach can support introspection, and fine-and coarse-grained adaptation of the resource management framework.…”

“…In mission-critical systems, adaptive middleware must make such modifications dependably, i.e., while meeting stringent end-to-end QoS requirements. Reflective middleware [Bla99] goes further to permit automated examination of the capabilities it offers, and to permit automated adjustment to optimize those capabilities. Reflective techniques make the internal organization of systems-as well as the mechanisms used in their construction-both visible and manipulatible for middleware and application programs to inspect and modify at runtime.…”
