The design of a novel context-aware policy model to support machine-based learning and reasoning

Abstract: The purpose of autonomic networking is to manage the business and technical complexity of networked components and systems. However, the lack of a common lingua franca makes it impossible to use vendor-specific network management data to ascertain the state of the network at any given time. Furthermore, the tools used to analyze management data are all different, and hence require different data in different formats. This complicates the construction of context from diverse information sources. This paper desc… Show more

“…Figure 12 illustrates the selected features of context exploitation. According to the first branch, context information must be disseminated by implementing policy-based mechanisms, as it was proposed by Salomie et al [32], Strassner et al [33], and Samaan et al [14]. Thus, control policies can be applied to acquire, handle, store, and disseminate context information.…”

“…Barrett [33] specified a generic DL policy model that seeks to embody concepts common to most policy languages. Whilst these works have concentrated on models of policies in isolation, few have considered integrating policy models with models of the systems they govern, exceptions being Strassner et al [34] who created an integrated UML model of policies and context, and REI for which an engine exists that, can partially reasons over REI policies and domain knowledge in RDF and OWL. Apart from such DLbased approaches, Protune 16 (developed in the REWERSE EU project) uses a rule-based language and engine that allows reasoning about policies, mainly negotiation.…”

“…In order to maintain an up‐to‐date view on the state of the managed resources, potentially very large amounts of information need to be disseminated from the network's resources to AEs and between AEs themselves . The context of an entity is defined as the collection of measured and inferred knowledge that describes the state and environment in which that entity exists or has existed . In this article, we propose a novel method that allows management components to semantically define the types of context in which they are interested, by way of a set of filter rules.…”
