The Design and Test for Degradation of Energy Density of a Silica Gel-Based Energy Storage System Using Low Grade Heat for Desorption Phase

Abstract: This paper presents the design and a short cycle repeatability test of a silica gel-based thermal energy storage system using low grade heat for the desorption phase. The system was designed to test the degradation in the energy storage density of the adsorbent material for a 2 h working period in a short number of cycles (5 cycles). Low grade heat of 70 °C is used for regeneration during the desorption phase in each cycle. It was found that a reduction of 1.6 W/kg per each cycle of energy storage was observed… Show more

“…The thermal conductive silica gel not only has high and low-temperature resistance, but also has the advantages of aging resistance, electrical insulation, etc. In addition, it also exhibits excellent moisture resistance, impact resistance, corona resistance, leakage resistance, chemical stability, and good adhesion with most metal and non-metallic materials 16 . The thermal conductive silica gel has broad application prospects in various fields, and the relevant parameters are detailed in Table 1 17 .…”

“…In an adsorption heat storage system, water is the most widely used adsorbate due to its high latent heat. Various porous materials (e.g., zeolite, activated carbon, silica gel, and MOF) are used as adsorption storage materials [ 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 ]. Compared with other adsorbents, activated carbon with high porosity and high thermal stability has many advantages in adsorption heat storage.…”
