Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify the factors that managers have to take into consideration when they implement the strategic information systems planning (SISP) process to develop information systems (IS) in the logistics sector. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected using questionnaires to IS executives in Greek small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) of the logistics sector. Factor analysis is performed on the detailed items of the SISP process constructs. Findings The results of this paper indicate that IS executives do not focus on defining goals, which will be used to improve the operations of the supply chain for the IS development. Both IS executives and managers from the logistics department of each organization should participate in the process of information technology (IT) strategy formulation and implementation. Executives from the logistics department of each organization should be aware of implementing environmental and organizational analysis with greater meticulousness, to identify IT opportunities and apply IT strategy with greater agility rather than now. Practical implications A strategic planning process for IS development in the logistics sector is required to achieve the consistently IS planning objectives. This is an important challenge for executives in SMEs who do not concentrate on implementing a strategic planning process for IS development. Originality/value This paper examines the factors that influence the strategic development of IS in the logistics sector and improve the effectiveness of decision-making regarding the supply chain’s operation.

The specific attributes of agrifood supply chains, along with their importance for the economy and society, have led to an increased interest in the parameters that enhance their effectiveness. Recently, numerous digital tools aimed at improving supply chain effectiveness have been developed. The majority of existing research focuses on optimizing individual processes rather than the overall growth of a food supply chain. This study aims to identify the stages of the information systems planning (ISP) process that affect the success of developing a strategic decision support system (DSS) for improving the decision-making process in the agrifood supply chains. Data were collected from 66 IT executives from Greek small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the agrifood sector and analyzed using regression analysis. The results revealed that situation analysis is the only stage of ISP that predicts ISP success. These findings can assist managers in appreciating the critical role of ISP for improving the performance of agrifood supply chain operations. Implementing the most appropriate information systems (IS) and digital tools results in increased competitive advantage, cost savings, and increased customer value.

Durante los últimos años, el sector agroalimentario ha experimentado cambios significativos a nivel económico, tecnológico y social. Estos cambios han afectado la cadena completa de producción de alimentos, desde la agricultura hasta el procesamiento y distribución a los consumidores finales, el objetivo de este capítulo es presentar un marco de trabajo para la toma de decisiones estratégicas y la gestión de la información en el sector agroalimentario, con un enfoque en la logística y la selección de proveedores. Se llevó a cabo una revisión exhaustiva de la literatura existente sobre la toma de decisiones estratégicas y la gestión de la información en el sector agroalimentario, con un enfoque en la logística y la selección de proveedores. Se identificaron los principales desafíos y oportunidades en este campo y se propuso un marco de trabajo para la toma de decisiones con un enfoque en la logística y la selección de proveedores. El marco de trabajo incluye cuatro subsistemas: el Subsistema de Análisis Ambiental, el Subsistema de Establecimiento de Objetivos, el Subsistema de Soporte de Decisiones y el Subsistema de Planificación Estratégica de Sistemas de Información. La toma de decisiones estratégicas y la gestión de la información son fundamentales para el éxito del sector agroalimentario, especialmente en lo que respecta a la logística y la selección de proveedores. El marco de trabajo propuesto puede ayudar a los tomadores de decisiones a abordar los desafíos y aprovechar las oportunidades en este campo de manera más efectiva.
