Background: The present work investigates the ridge characteristics and ridge density of fingerprints to determine gender differences among population of Punjab. The main characteristics studied were general pattern type, ridge density and minutiae or ridge characteristics with respect to general pattern type. Further, instead of using conventional method of ridge counting, Adobe Photoshop cs5 is used to conclude ridge density and minutiae characteristics. Experimental results shows, along with ridge density, minutiae characteristics procure special importance in determining the gender from fingerprints. Results: The results suggest that mean ridge density in males is 12.32 ridges/25mm 2, where as it was 13.94 ridges/ 25mm 2 in females. The study has supported the hypothesis that women tend to have thin ridges i.e. more ridge density as compared to men. The study of minutiae or ridge characteristics revealed that frequency of ridge ending (50.24 index fingers, 50.62 middle fingers) and enclosures (2.87% in index and 3.08% in middle finger) is higher in females as compared to males. Further significant gender difference has been observed in minutiae characteristics with respect to general pattern type. Among both genders; males tend to have more number of minutiae as compared to females in case of loop and whorl as general pattern type. In case of Arch pattern females tends to have more number of minutiae as compared to males. Conclusions: The research carried by the authors of this paper synchronizes with the findings of other researchers despite differences in populations selected. More number of minutiae and ridges were found in case of females as compared to male fingerprints. In the present study an attempt has been made to validate the method by analyzing the blind samples which likewise showed more number of minutiae in case of females as compared to males. Although the study agrees with common theory of more ridge details in females as compared to males, yet low success rate in case of blind trial has unveiled further scope of research required to determine gender from fingerprints found at scene of crime or disputed documents.

A genetic subtype of schizophrenia has been described in 22q11 Deletion syndrome. Previous studies have described an excess of dermatoglyphic alterations in schizophrenia, such as low a-b ridge counts (ABRCs), a high frequency of ridge dissociations, and increased dermatoglyphic fluctuating asymmetry. Little is known however, about the dermatoglyphic profile of 22qDS subjects showing psychotic symptoms and its similarity to the previously reported anomalies in schizophrenia. We studied the palmar dermatoglyphics of 22 subjects with 22qDS of predominantly Caucasian origin, 15 of whom had psychotic illness, and in 84 healthy controls of similar ethnicity. We observed higher values for total ATD angle in cases than in controls (P = 0.04). In addition, there was an excess of radial figures in the hypothenar area in cases, especially in the left hand. Interestingly, greater fluctuating asymmetry, determined by the absolute difference between right and left ABRC, was observed in 22qDS subjects compared to controls (P = 0.05). However, no differences were found for ABRCs and frequency of dissociations. Despite the small sample size, the palmprints analyzed suggest the existence of an altered dermatoglyphic profile in 22qDS, involving: (i) ATD angle amplitude, (ii) presence of radial loops in the hypothenar area, and (iii) an increment of fluctuating asymmetry. The first two features are similar to those found in other genetic syndromes associated with low IQ, while high levels of fluctuating asymmetry have often been reported in schizophrenia.Chromosome 22q11 Deletion syndrome (22qDS) is due to microdeletions of chromosome region 22q11.2, involving multiple genes [Karayiorgou et al., 1995;Bassett and Chow, 1999;Bassett et al., 2001]. 22qDS comprises several genetic syndromes, including velocardiofacial syndrome and DiGeorge syndrome. The most common phenotypic consequences of this deletion are, among others, (1) learning disabilities, (2) palatal anomalies, (3) typical facial features, (4) congenital cardiac defects, and (5) psychiatric disorders. The estimated prevalence of the deletion 22q11.2 is 1/4,000 [du Montcel et al., 1996], which usually occurs as a sporadic mutation, but approximately 10% of cases are inherited from transmitting parents, who often have a less severe phenotype [Demczuk and Aurias, 1995].

Digital dermatoglyphics has been found useful in forensic medicine and identification purposes. It is useful in medical diagnosis of genetically inherited diseases and in detection of crimes. Anthropometric studies of the digit, palm and feet provides data that reveal the relative distribution of dermal ridges among people in different geographical zones. Cross-sectional study was carried out using 100 males and 100 female healthy students of Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) in Odisha State of India to establish their digital dermatoglyphics traits. This was done by counting and classifying their ridge pattern configurations of arches, loops and whorls and by counting their ridge densities/25mm. 2 Plain arches were the most predominant digital pattern in females (31%) than in males (10%), followed by loops (38%) in males than (28.5%) in females. The sex differences between these patterns are significant. Sexual dimorphism was also evident with the males≤11/25mm 2 showing lower in finger ridge count than the females 12/25mm 2 . This study has established on the normal dermatoglyphics patterns of medical students of KIMS in Orissa State of India. Due to their uniqueness and immutability, fingerprints are also one of the most commonly employed biometric features. Fingerprints of an individual have been used as one of the vital parts of identification in both civil and criminal cases because of their unique properties of absolute identity. Fingerprints have become increasingly popular for personal identification and verification in applications including banking security and physical access control. In addition to their value in criminal matters, fingerprints can ensure personal identification for humanitarian reasons, such as in cases of amnesia, missing persons, or unknown deceased. Fingerprints are invaluable in effecting identifications in tragedies such as fire, flood, and vehicle crashes. Digital dermatoglyphics has been found useful in forensic medicine and identification purposes. It is useful in medical diagnosis of genetically inherited diseases and in detection of crimes. Finger ridges and ridge patterns are highly heritable, durable, and age-independent human traits and have been studied as a model quantitative trait in humans for over the years. They develop between approximately the 13th and 18th weeks of gestation, and in the absence of trauma remain essentially unchanged throughout life. Despite many well developed fingerprint matching techniques and a wide range of biometric applications, a reliable fingerprint based sex determination method does not seem to be available.
