In this paper, we present an investigation into plasma density disturbances and electric field perturbations associated with China, Sichuan, Wenchuan earthquake of magnitude M = 7.9 that occurred on May 12, 2008, at 06:28:01 UTC. The DEMETER (Detection of Electromagnetic Emissions Transmitted from Earthquake Regions) satellite was launched on June 29, 2004. The orbit of DEMETER is polar, circular with an altitude of 710 km and its main scientific objective is the study of ionospheric perturbations linked to seismic activity. For satellite orbits near the epicenter region, some ionospheric effects are investigated, which can be considered as possible earthquake precursors. The paper discusses anomalous effects in the ionosphere associated with the Wenchuan earthquake, which cannot be explained by factors of solar-magnetospheric origin. For satellite orbits eight to four days before the main shock, fluctuations in ion density and increase in horizontal and vertical components of electric field are observed near the epicenter. Posteffect is observed too. The observations suggest a coupling between the lithosphereatmosphere-ionosphere and can be associated with the earthquake growing processes in the lithosphere and troposphere zones above the source. The results of ionospheric anomalous effects are presented and discussed. The results obtained are important because they are observed very near to epicenter.

Abstract. We report a study of penetration of the VLF electromagnetic waves induced by lightning to the ionosphere. We compare the fractional hop whistlers recorded by the ICE experiment onboard the DEMETER satellite with lightning detected by the EUCLID detection network. To identify the fractional hop whistlers, we have developed software for automatic detection of the fractional-hop whistlers in the VLF spectrograms. This software provides the detection times of the fractional hop whistlers and the average amplitudes of these whistlers. Matching the lightning and whistler data, we find the pairs of causative lightning and corresponding whistler. Processing data from ∼200 DEMETER passes over the European region we obtain a map of mean amplitudes of whistler electric field as a function of latitudinal and longitudinal difference between the location of the causative lightning and satellite magnetic footprint. We find that mean whistler amplitude monotonically decreases with horizontal distance up to ∼1000 km from the lightning source. At larger distances, the mean whistler amplitude usually merges into the background noise and the whistlers become undetectable. The maximum of whistler intensities is shifted from the satellite magnetic footprint ∼1 • owing to the oblique propagation. The average amplitude of whistlers increases with the lightning current. At nighttime (late evening), the average amplitude of whistlers is about three times higher than during the daytime (late morning) for the same lightning current.

Abstract. Based on data recorded by the French DEME-TER satellite, plasma perturbations have been analyzed before the Wenchuan 8.0 earthquake which occurred on 12 May 2008. Using the revisited orbits, the seasonal variations of the O + density at daytime and nighttime were obtained respectively. There mainly exist two kinds of shapes of O + density, with peak values in the Northern Hemisphere during May to September and reversely in the Southern Hemisphere during other months. Analysis on local daytime O + density showed that it reached its lowest values 3 days prior to the earthquake, i.e. on 9 May. With studies in more than 3 month time series and comparison with those in 2006 and 2007, it was found that the significant decrease of the O + density on 9 May 2008 was different from the trend variations of 2007 and 2006 both with relatively higher O + density in May. In addition, the ion density and temperature was also analyzed before the earthquake at local nighttime. They showed smallest value in O + density and fast and short-term variations in ion temperature on 9 May above the epicenter area. All these plasma anomalies may be related to the Wenchuan earthquake. Finally, using our results and those published in other papers, the possible mechanisms of these ionospheric anomalies were discussed.
