Groundwater remains an essential natural resource that is found in every part of the Earth’s subsurface. However, the high level of borehole failures due to inadequate subsurface information about the regional hydrogeological nature has led to significant water scarcity in both rural and semi-urban regions. This study applies the vertical electrical sounding method to delineate regional aquifer potential alongside the vulnerability to the agrochemical activities in a rapidly emerging agricultural development at Kujama Farmland for groundwater development. Information obtained was used to construct the soil depth section and the groundwater potential as well as its protective capacity. The depth section shows that the study area is underlain by four distinctive geo-electric layers. The weathered/fractured unit was delineated as the water-bearing unit of the study area for groundwater development. The aquifer parameters such as resistivity and depth values vary between 21 Ωm – 328 Ωm and 19 m – 42 m, respectively. However, the observed thick aquifer with low resistivity values was considered as the region of the rich aquifer and it could supply sustainable water for drinking, domestic use and irrigation. Consequently, the siting of industrial/public/domestic boreholes should sunk to at least a depth of 30/20/10m respectively. On the other hand, the computed aquifer parameters show that the study is considered 75% highly protective, 22% moderately protective and 2% weakly protective from the possible surface contaminants emanating from the emerging agricultural activities at Kujama Multipurpose Farmland.

Geophysical survey for groundwater was conducted in two newly built halls of residence (hostels) named Dangote and Shehu Idris at the second phase of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria in Nigeria. The vertical electrical sounding (VES) technique of resistivity method was employed with Schlumberger array in seven VES points distributed within the two hostels. Results showed that 4 to 6 geoelectric layers exist within the study area for a spacing of at most 200 m between current electrodes. The resistivity values of the geoelectric layers in all the VES points ranged from 26.6 Ωm – 30342 Ωm while the thickness and depth ranged from 0.263 m – 40.34 m and 0.572 m – 50.66 m respectively. However, four VES points (two in each hostel) were identified to be suitable for borehole drilling though, three out of these four VES points have single aquifer in each with resistivity and thickness ranging from 34.4 Ωm – 40.57 Ωm and 2.02 m – 7.49 m respectively. Conversely, the fourth VES point has two aquifers positioned at the third and fifth layers with resistivity values ranging from 26.6 Ωm – 51.4 Ωm and thickness ranging from 1.93 m – 18.7 m. It was recommended that among the four VES points (two in each hostel) identified to contain aquifers, priority should be given to the ones with larger thickness in each hostel.

Understanding the hydrochemical and hydrogeological physiognomies of subsurface water in a semi-arid region is important for the effective management of water resources. This paper presents a thorough review of the hydrogeology and hydrochemistry of the Hadejia-Yobe basin. The hydrochemical and hydrogeological configurations as reviewed indicated that the Chad Formation is the prolific aquifer in the basin. Boreholes piercing the Gundumi formation have a depth ranging from 20-85 meters. The hydrochemical composition of groundwater revealed water of excellent quality, as all the studied parameters were found to have concentrations within WHO and Nigeria’s standard for drinking water quality. However, further studies are required for further evaluation of water quality index, heavy metal pollution index, and irrigation water quality. Also, geochemical, and stable isotope analysis is required for understanding the provenance of salinity and hydrogeochemical controls on groundwater in the basin.
