Mayiladuthurai is situated on the banks of river Cauveri. This research work aims to determine the quality of water which were collected from twenty groundwater sources. From the identified twenty locations, water samples were collected. The sampling stations include three taluks in the Mayiladuthurai district. The samples were analysed for various physicochemical qualities of water and compared with BIS & WHO standards. Frequency histogram and statistical analysis were applied to analyse the obtained data. Results of hydrochemistry revealed the dominance of hardness, magnesium and fluoride ions. The present investigation of hydrochemistry concludes that the drinking nature of the analyzed samples was very weak quality-wise and could not be used for drinking as such. Besides, fluoride ion related health problems were raised in some packets of the study area. The analytical report reveals that the quality of water has deteriorated and this may have a severe impact on human beings and other organisms in the study area.

Developing aquifers as part of sustainability efforts toward groundwater development is a tactical approach to meeting water demand and management objectives. Delineation of aquifer storage potential (ASP) and longitudinal conductance ($${S}_{L}$$ S L ) is a good approach to protect and manage groundwater resources. A Schlumberger configuration was applied to delineate fifteen (15) vertical electrical sounding (VES) stations alongside a 2D electrical resistivity imagery (ERI) profile and regional borehole data to characterize the regional ASP. The results of the study show that the layer resistivity and thickness values of the regional aquifer unit range from 39.9–105 Ωm and 15–44 m, respectively, while the overburden thickness overlays the regional aquifer unit varied between 5–10 m corresponding to the regional borehole data. The weathered/fractured basemen, which constitute the regional aquifer unit were delineated, which consists of shallow, moderate, and deep aquifer zones. The deep aquifer zones fall within the depth of 30–44 m and are considered suitable for groundwater prospective. The weathered layer with appreciably low resistivity values with thick aquifer regolith has also been identified as most suitable for borehole siting. The weathered/fractured encountered within thick aquifer regolith were mapped as the region with a high ASP for groundwater development. In addition, the values of longitudinal conductance, $${S}_{L}$$ S L and transverse resistance, $${R}_{T}$$ R T estimated from aquifer parameters vary between $$0.21-0.85 \,{\Omega }^{-1}$$ 0.21 - 0.85 Ω - 1 and $$1695-3124\, {\Omega m}^{2}$$ 1695 - 3124 Ω m 2 , respectively. The $${S}_{L}$$ S L values show that the study area falls within moderate ($$0.20-0.69 \,{\Omega }^{-1}$$ 0.20 - 0.69 Ω - 1 ) and good ($$0.7-4.9 \,{\Omega }^{-1}$$ 0.7 - 4.9 Ω - 1 ), which invariably determined the regional aquifer protective capacity. Thus, the DC geoelectrical approach has been successfully employed in a lateritic-based environment to delineate aquifer-promising zones for regional groundwater development.

The study deals with the determination of geothermal potential of Yankari Game reserve which involves; estimate of the Curie point depth, heat flow and geothermal gradient from spectral analysis of aeromagnetic data covering an area located approximately at longitude 9.7567 oN and Latitude 10.5094 oE. Radially power spectrum was applied to the aeromagnetic data of the study area divided into 4 square blocks and each block analyzed using the spectral centroid method to obtain depth to the top, centroid and bottom of magnetic sources. The depth values were subsequently used to evaluate the Curie-point depth (CPD), geothermal gradient and near-surface heat flow in the study area. The values of the curie point depths (Zb), range from 8.91 km to 10.11 km, with a mean value of 9.71 km, geothermal gradient, range from 57.37 oCkm-1 to 65.10 oCkm-1, with mean value of 60.10 oCkm-1 and heat flow (q), range from 143.43 mWm-2 to 162.75 mWm-2, with a mean value of 150.24 mWm-2. These results entails that the area under study has good geothermal potential for exploration.
