The Degrees of Understanding and the Inferential Component of Understanding

Abstract: Current debates on the nature of explanatory understanding have converged on the idea that at least one of the core components of understanding is inferential. Philosophers have characterized the inferential dimension of understanding as consisting of several related cognitive abilities to grasp a given explanation and the nexus of complementing explanations to which it belongs. Whilst analyses of both the subjective epistemic abilities related to grasping and objective features of the inferential links within… Show more

“…Thus, mapping the spectrum of understanding is not a trivial task. For instance, some accounts have offered suggestions about the evaluation of degrees of understanding (Baumberger, 2019;Kelp, 2015;Khalifa, 2017;Petkov, 2021), and specified some of the conditions of understanding, approximate understanding, and the failures to achieve understanding (Park, 2017(Park, , 2020. Given this rich literature and its recent developments, we believe that we can present an updated and unified account focused on explanatory understanding, and then use such an account to present a more systematic and expanded study of the conditions under which explanatory understanding cannot arise.…”
