The deep structure of northern England and the Iapetus Suture zone from BIRPS deep seismic reflection profiles

Abstract: The NEC deep seismic reflection profile images structures in the lower crust which represent the Iapetus Suture zone beneath southern Scotland and northern England. On the basis of reflectivity characteristics of the lower crust and reflection Moho we recognize four different crustal zones which correspond to four crustal/terrane types: Midland Valley (zone A), a sub-continental subduction complex (zone B ), Lake District (zone C ) and Mid… Show more

“…Baltica crust against Avalonia crust). An excellent example of such a structure is provided by the image of the Caledonian suture on the BIRPS NEC line off the east coast of England (Freemann, Klemperer & Hobbs, 1988). If, however, the two crustal units juxtaposed by a vertical fault have the same character, or are devoid of characteristic reflection patterns, there is no lateral contrast and the fault remains invisible.…”

“…The WINCH (Hall et al, 1984) profile runs along the whole west coast of Scotland to the west of the Hebrides. The NEC (Freeman et al, 1988) Figure 13. The events are less scattered and in many areas lines of events are more clearly seen.…”
