The decomposition of inter-group differences in a logit model: Extending the Oaxaca-Blinder approach with an application to school enrolment in India

Abstract: This paper suggests a method of decomposing differences in inter-group probabilities from a logit model and shows how it can be related to similar decompositions derived from a Oaxaca-Blinder framework. In so doing, it offers a solution to a problem, embedded within the Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition, relating to the appropriate choice of common coefficient vectors with which to evaluate the different attribute vectors. The decomposition method also shows how pair-wise comparisons of groups might be conducted in… Show more

“…Association of independent variables with tooth brushing is assessed through logistic regression analysis and presented by crude and adjusted OR (95 % CI). Decomposition of the gap in tooth brushing between the first and fifth quintiles of SES was evaluated using the counterfactual decomposition technique which is widely used to study mean outcome differences between groups [ 18 , 24 , 25 ].…”

“…15 The results can be obtained from wchung@yuhs.ac 16 In order to decompose the main factors underlying the decline in the probability of stating "must have a son" (intensity of son preference), we used the econometric method extended from original models within regression analyses suggested by Oaxaca and Blinder (Blinder 1973;Oaxaca 1973) to models of discrete choice with a binary dependent variable (Borooah and Iyer 2005;Gomulka and Stern 1990;Nielsen 1998). Yun (2004) and Powers (2006) recently developed a method to overcome a "path dependence" problem-namely that, in nonlinear models, the independent contribution of one variable to the difference depends on the values of the other variables and on the order in which these variables are entered in the decomposition.…”

“…This approach has been the most frequently used in recent decades to identify and quantify the underlying causes of differences between races or individuals of different genders observed on the labour market, in education and in many other areas. Still more recently, it has been used to explain the difference in the level of poverty and inequality (Booroah and Iyer, 2005;Biewen and Jenkins, 2005;Bhaumik et al, 2006;Adoho and Boccanfuso, 2007).…”
