This article outlines a systematic theory of style that aims to combine "social formalism" with narratology. Beginning with a reading of a little-known essay by Raymond Williams on the history of English novelistic prose, the article argues that Williams's insights into the social preconditions of modern style can be suggestively combined with Mikhail M. Bakhtin's theory of the inherent multiplicity of novelistic discourse and Richard Walsh's pragmatic theory of narrative "voice" to produce a core definition of style. Style is (1) a linguistic mode of social relation; (2) one of several subordinated, relatively autonomous linguistic operations or "substyles" (Walsh's instance, idiom, interpellation); or more properly, (3) the total mode of configuration of these substyles. The article then proceeds to embed this definition within a broader critical poetics. It argues that stylistic production in the novel is literally "in-formed" by several factors, for example, the "linguistic situation" (the state of language as a writer would have experienced it, including its inner tensions and social stratifications), "stylistic ideology" (the self-conscious stylistic projects that writers develop), and the linguistic proprieties of inherited novelistic genres, types, and forms (which are themselves mediations of sociality). These categories are exemplified through an analysis of Virginia Woolf's To the Lighthouse (1927).

Als ein anthropologisch-kognitives Grundprinzip ist Perspektivierung eine Grundbedingung aller Wahrnehmung: Jede Betrachtung setzt implizit den Betrachterstandort eines wahrnehmenden Subjekts voraus und selegiert sowie segmentiert somit die Realität in Wirklichkeitsausschnitte. In diesem allgemeinen Sinn ist jede Form von Repräsentation -und damit auch die Narration als basaler Darstellungsmodus -genuin perspektivisch (vgl. Schmid 2003, 256 sowie 2008 Hartner 2012, 3). Für das Erzählen gilt dies jedoch noch in besonderer Weise, da narrative Texte die repräsentierten Ereignisse nicht nur durch den Blick eines aktuellen Sprechers, sondern zusätzlich durch Erzählinstanz(en) und Figuren perspektivisch gebrochen vermitteln. Das Konzept der Perspektive ist damit unmittelbar an die Mittelbarkeit des Erzählens als narratologische Grundkonstante gebunden.Literaturwissenschaft und Narratologie blicken daher auf eine lange Tradition der Erforschung von Erzählperspektiven zurück. Dass dem Terminus der Perspektive dennoch "eine bemerkenswerte terminologische Unklarheit und Uneinheitlichkeit in der Verwendung" (Nünning und Nünning 2000a, 10) zuzusprechen ist, liegt neben der Tatsache, dass Perspektive ein relationales Konzept ist und damit nicht konkrete Entitäten erfasst (Lanser 1981), auch daran, dass es als abstrakte Relation zwischen einem Betrachterstandort und einem fokussierten Realitätsausschnitt auf unterschiedliche Ebenen narrativer Texte und damit auf unterschiedliche Phänomenbereiche bezogen worden ist. Was unter narrativer Perspektivierung verstanden wird, ist damit selbst von der Betrachterperspektive abhängig.
