The Dark Side of the MBTI: Psychological Type and Interpersonal Derailers

Abstract: Over 4000 British adults completed the Hogan Development Survey (HDS) (Hogan & Hogan, 1997) which measures eleven potential derailment behaviours ("dark side" traits) based on the personality disorders and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (Briggs & Myers, 1987) a famous measure of "normal" personality functioning. In all, five of the eleven "dark side" traits were correlated with the Extraversion-Introversion dimensions, none with Sensing-Intuition, seven with Thinking-Feeling and four with the Judging-Perceivi… Show more

“…There are very few studies testing dimensions with less adaptive personality traits ( McCrae and Costa, 1989 ; MacDonald and Holland, 1993 ; MacDonald et al, 1994 ; Furnham et al, 2003 ) and psychological disorders ( Coolidge et al, 2001 ; Furnham and Crump, 2014 ), and ours is the first to directly test the bipolarity of personality types in the population with varying levels of psychological distress. Thus, it was challenging to compare our study with previous studies.…”

“…Out of the bipolar dimensions, S vs. N and F vs. T were not as significantly correlated with MMPI subscales as other dimensions. Furnham and Crump (2014) used the Hogan Development Survey to measure dark-side variables that depict personality disorders and the MBTI on working adults in England. Five of the 11 dark-side traits were correlated with the E vs.…”

“…Of the nine studies centered on the Jungian personality styles, four involved cognitive outcomes (Karimnia and Mahjubi, 2013 ; Kim et al, 2013 ; Ayoubi and Ustwani, 2014 ; Rashid and Duys, 2015 ), two concerned affective outcomes (Ahmed, 2015 ; Choi et al, 2018 ), one pertained to ego development (Vincent et al, 2013 ), and two concerned interpersonal behaviors (Brandt and Laiho, 2013 ; Furnham and Crump, 2014 ). In the following, these studies are introduced.…”

“…In the second study, Furnham and Crump ( 2014 ) investigated the relationship between personality styles and dysfunctional interpersonal behaviors among 4,812 British working adults. The participants responded to the MBTI-Form G (Briggs and Myers, 1987 ) and the Hogan Development Survey (Hogan and Hogan, 1997 ).…”

“…Both the DSM personality disorders and the derived personality derailers of the HDS show a clustering around a three‐factor structure readily interpretable using the three trends, a finding that has been replicated in several studies (Coolidge, Moor, Yamazaki, Stewart & Segal, ; Furnham & Crump, ; Furnham & Trickey, ; Furnham et al ., ; Hogan & Hogan, ). Excitable, Cautious, Reserved, Skeptical, and Leisurely load onto the moving away trend, while Mischievous, Bold, Colorful, and Imaginative load onto the moving against trend.…”
