The Dark Side of Structural Holes

Abstract: While previous research has investigated structural hole positions through single-level models, describing their positive effects, this article elaborates a multilevel model and supports an antithetical position, revealing a dark side of structural holes. Although individual-level structural holes are supposed to exercise positive effects, it is theorized that group-level mean and grouplevel variance in structural hole positions are negatively associated with individual outcomes. The argument that justifies th… Show more

“…Secondly, actors may benefit from structural hole positions only as long as opportunistic behavior does not negatively affect collaboration in the future. Brokers' power-oriented behavior can be detrimental for group functioning and climate (Bizzi 2013). Although beneficial on an individual level, structural hole positions negatively affect individual outcomes on an aggregate level (Bizzi 2013(Bizzi , p. 1555.…”

“…Although beneficial on an individual level, structural hole positions negatively affect individual outcomes on an aggregate level (Bizzi 2013(Bizzi , p. 1555. This results in a shared perception of potential opportunistic behaviors, which leads to increasing monitoring efforts (Bizzi 2013(Bizzi , p. 1558, a logic of calculation and personal gain (Buskens and van de Rijt 2008, p. 372), learning races within interorganizational networks (Gulati et al 2000, p. 211), or even network failure (Schrank and Whitford 2011, p. 168).…”

“…With respect to unethical decisionmaking, however, the findings to date have been inconclusive. Distinct and mutually exclusive network structures have been suggested to increase the risk of unethical decision-making (e.g., Bizzi, 2013;Brass et al, 1998;Flynn & Wiltermuth, 2010;Lee, 2013).…”

“…This includes brokers being associated with unethical acts against their group as well as others (Bizzi, 2013). Arguably, this is due to their high network centrality (i.e., they connect individuals who are not connected among themselves) and therefore norms are not very salient among them.…”

“…The presence of more structural holes in their social networks provided ventures with a diverse source of knowledge and information (Aarstad, 2012). In general, knowledge and resource-sharing benefits of collaborative networks rely on trust and shared norms of behaviour (Bizzi, 2013). These trust and behaviour norms are more likely to be present in strongly tied connections within a network, especially in the knowledge fields.…”
