We review the pyroelectric properties and electronic structure of Li2B4O7(110) and Li2B4O7(100) surfaces. There is evidence for a pyroelectric current along the [110] direction of stoichiometric Li2B4O7 so that the pyroelectric coefficient is nonzero but roughly 103 smaller than along the [001] direction of spontaneous polarization. Abrupt decreases in the pyroelectric coefficient along the [110] direction can be correlated with anomalies in the elastic stiffness C33D contributing to the concept that the pyroelectric coefficient is not simply a vector but has qualities of a tensor, as expected. The time dependent surface photovoltaic charging suggests that surface charging is dependent on crystal orientation and doping, as well as temperature.

Multiple stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) and cascaded nonlinear χ (3) ↔ χ (2) generation in tetragonal non-centrosymmetric Li2B4O7 crystal were observed under picosecond Nd 3+ :Y3Al5O12 laser excitation. All registered Stokes and antiStokes lasing components in the visible and near-IR were identified and attributed to the SRS-promoting vibration modes of the studied crystal. We classify the Li2B4O7 crystals as a promising media for up-and down-Raman laser-frequency converters. In the work a brief review of nonlinear-laser properties of SRSactive borate crystals is given.Example of a grown crystal of Li2B4O7, together with a crystal sample that were cut from the bulk of the crystal

Lithium tetraborate, Li 2 B 4 O 7 (LTB) crystals were grown by Czochralski technique. It belongs to tetragonal system with lattice parameter a = b = 9.479 Å, c = 10.286 Å. Transmission range of this crystal is 170 nm -3300 nm. This material has attracted much attention because of its application in higher harmonic generation of Nd:YAG laser and radiation dosimetry. The grown crystals were characterized for their optical inhomogeneity using etch pit study, hardness, conoscopy, interferometry, and UV-VIS transmittance techniques.
