“…The classification of our pituitary adenomas by light microscopic -HE and Mallory staining -method, similarly to others did not infer the joint presence of Gil and PRL (Guyda et al, 1973;Zimmermann et al, 1974;Corenblum et al, 1976) and the chromophob adenomas were not without exception hormonally inactive (McCormick and Halmi 1971;Kovács et al, 1977), Using other staining -performic acid-alcian blue -PASorange G - (Pearse 1949;Adams and Swettenham 1958) the light microscopic investigation promises more accuracy, detecting smaller amounts of intracellular hormone granules, so lowering the ratio of the chromophobe adenomas to the real level (Trouillas et al, 1980;Gottschalk 1984).…”

“…One reason for the difficulty in determining the relationship between Mellgren's hypertrophic amphophils and the "adrenalectomy cells" of the present study is that basophils stained by aniline blue are not exactly equivalent to "basophils" which give a positive reaction in the application of the PAS method. In particular, as Pearse (56) observed, many poorly granulated PAS-positive basophils are chromophobic in aniline blue-stained preparations. Thus, it is not possible to know whether the hypertrophic amphophils would be wholly, or in part, poorly granulated PAS-positive ceils or truly chromo- * Time interval between injection of tritiated glycine less than 1,000 the delineation of the cell borders is very difficult to determine.…”

“…This patient had had an episode of pituitary apoplexy 8 months previously, and was described by Tevaarwerk et al (1969). In the seventeen diagnostic biopsies, light microscopic examination of trichrome-PAS stained sections (Pearse, 1949) showed fragments of chromophobe adenoma in eleven cases and fragments of acidophilic adenoma in six cases.…”
