The CyberKnife radiosurgery system for lung cancer

Abstract: The CyberKnife is a frameless image-guided radiotherapy system involving a 6-MV linear accelerator mounted on a robotic arm. The imaging system consists of two diagnostic x-ray sources mounted to the ceiling paired with amorphous silicon detectors to acquire live digital radiographic images of the tumor or tumor surrogates including bony anatomy or implanted fiducial markers. The Synchrony system enables 4D real-time tracking of tumors that move with respiration. Owing to this complex system, moving tumors can… Show more

“…The safety of SRS on pulmonary metastasis from OS may be contributed to not only the technical improvements but also the unique metastatic characteristics of OS, which are usually small lesions and often located at peripheral parts of the lung. For SRS, smaller lesions at peripheral site of the lung without association with central airways means less possibility of lung injury (22,23), which implies that pulmonary metastasis from OS is a potentially good candidate for SRS.…”

“…The target locating system (TLS) is composed of two ceiling‐mounted diagnostic X‐ray sources paired with amorphous silicon detectors, and acquires live digital radiographic images of the target, bony anatomy, and fiducial markers. The Synchrony system enables three‐dimensional real‐time tracking of tumors that move with respiration (18) . The system uses infrared markers that are continually tracked by three flash‐point cameras, which generate 26 images per second.…”
