The Current Trend of the Translational Research Paradigm

Abstract: The translational research paradigm is a process of discovering basic science concepts and applying the knowledge in clinical practice, aiming to improve patient care. The stages involved in the paradigm form a complex network of shared knowledge amongst research collaborators, including patients. This nature of the paradigm allows those involved to work together effectively. However, the translational research paradigm is often overlooked by many scientists, educators, and research institutions. Hence, a larg… Show more

“…This type of research in the field of health and medicine is defined as research that uses the results of basic science research and clinical research to improve health outcomes (47)(48)(49). From the perspective of researchers in this field, translational research includes the conversion of basic science research into clinical knowledge and the conversion of clinical knowledge into guidelines that promote the health of individuals in the community or patients.…”

“…In classic translational research, the preclinical stage should check the link between the basic science concept and human medicine (T1) and then move onto clinical trials (T2 or phase 2 and 3 clinical trials). 7 The group has now delivered in their study, "Superior Capsule Reconstruction With Subacromial Allograft Spacer: Biomechnical Cadaveric Study of Subacromial Contact Pressure and Superior Humeral Head Translation," by Curtis, Lee, Qin, Edgington, Parekh, Miller, Tokish, Amirouche, and Athiviraham. 8 Eight cadaver specimens were used to test SCR with subacromial resurfacing and were compared with SCR alone, intact cuff, and supraspinatus and superior capsuleedeficient shoulders.…”

“…9,10 A current widely accepted model divides the translational paradigm into four stages, designated as T1, T2, T3, and T4. 11 The T1 stage is characterised by translation of knowledge to humans. In this stage, basic knowledge is translated to theoretical knowledge that can be applied to human medicine; this stage links basic science with potential clinical applications 12 and often involves phase 1 clinical trials.…”

“…14 The T3 stage comprises translation to practice; in this phase, new recommendations are translated into guidelines to treat complex patients routinely seen in practice. 11 The T4 stage comprises translation to communities or population health. In this stage, factors affecting the health of the population are analysed; the aim is to develop comprehensive methods of improving population health.…”
