The currency, completeness and quality of systematic reviews of acute management of moderate to severe traumatic brain injury: A comprehensive evidence map

Abstract: ObjectiveTo appraise the currency, completeness and quality of evidence from systematic reviews (SRs) of acute management of moderate to severe traumatic brain injury (TBI).MethodsWe conducted comprehensive searches to March 2016 for published, English-language SRs and RCTs of acute management of moderate to severe TBI. Systematic reviews and RCTs were grouped under 12 broad intervention categories. For each review, we mapped the included and non-included RCTs, noting the reasons why RCTs were omitted. An SR w… Show more

“…We will search systematic reviews using the Cochrane Library, Excerpta Medica Database (Embase), Epistemonikos,31 PubMed and the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews32 from 1990 to up to 6 months prior to submission for publication. Using a snowball approach, we will screen the references of included studies in addition to previous reviews on this subject 7 21–23 33…”

“…Interventions and treatment options for acute TBI have been the subject of multiple systematic reviews 21 22. Given this large body of available evidence, evidence maps have previously been used to summarise evidence from systematic reviews on acute TBI interventions 7 23. However, these evidence maps were not designed to target low-value practices and focused on moderate to severe TBI when the mild TBI population represent great potential for reducing low-value care.…”

“…Correctness, completeness, and currency are fundamental factors that describe the core concepts of health record data quality: if data is truthful, available, and the most recent available data (149,150).…”

“…For example, significant bodies of evidence exist concerning the optimum management of patients with traumatic brain injuries or a high total injury burden. [41][42][43] Articles not published in English were excluded from this review which may have introduced bias against evidence from trauma systems in some high-income countries, notably in Europe and South-East Asia. Language bias against lower-to-middle-income countries is likely to be minimal because studies in these settings were explicitly excluded in the review protocol.…”
