The curious case of IL‐33 in homeostasis and infection

Abstract: The importance of interleukin (IL)‐33 in promoting effective antiviral immune responses is evident, yet the critical cellular sources of IL‐33 in homeostasis and infection are largely unknown. In this issue of the European Journal of Immunology, Aparicio‐Domingo et al. [Eur. J. Immunol. 2021. 51: 76–90] explore the main source of IL‐33 expression in lymph nodes (LNs) and dissect its role in LN homeostasis and antiviral adaptive immune response. The authors reveal that fibroblastic reticular cells and lymphatic… Show more

“…IL-33/ST2 signaling then induces transcription of the downstream inflammatory and anti-inflammatory genes and leads to an adequate immune response [8,9]. As a key regulator of Th2 responses, IL-33/ST2 signal is primarily associated with immunity and immune-related disorders [10,11]. For example, binding with ST2, IL-33 could orchestrate the development and maintenance of adipose tissue-resident regulatory T cells and sustain their transcriptional signature [12].…”
