The curative and antioxidative efficiency of ivermectin and ivermectin + vitamin E-selenium treatment on canine Sarcoptes scabiei infestation

Abstract: The objective of the present study was to investigate the curative and antioxidative efficacy of ivermectin and ivermectin + vitamin E-selenium, and the influence of these agents on oxidative stress parameters in canines infested by Sarcoptes scabiei. Twenty two sarcoptic mites infested dogs and nine healthy dogs of 6 months to 2 years of age were divided into three groups. Group I comprised of healthy dogs (n=9) whereas animals in group II (n=11) and III (n=11) were positive for scabies. Group II animals were… Show more

“…3) Traditionally, organophosphates, organochlorine, pyrethrins, 4) ivermectin and abamectin 5) have been used as effective drugs for treatment and control of animal acariasis. However, the chemical control could increase resistance of target species to acaricides, 6) toxicity and environmental hazards.…”

“…Vitamin E (␣-tocopherol) is an important antioxidant nutrient required by the body. Earlier strong correlation was documented between deficiency of this vitamin and sarcoptic mange in animals (Behera et al, 2011;Saleh et al, 2011). Again, vitamin C is a very important intracellular antioxidant, which is thought to be involved in recycling the ␣-tocopheryl radical back to ␣-tocopheral (Halliwell, 2006).…”

“…While research continued for human use, new therapeutic targets for ivermectin have emerged. It is currently the better therapeutic option in the treatment of gnathostomiasis and crusted scabies, and could be an alternative option in ascariasis and Mansonella infections . Crotamiton is a topical drug used in the treatment of scabies and pruritus .…”
