During the period February to June 2020, heavy rainfall caused increases in levels and flooding in many lakes in East Africa. This coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic. These calamities affected ecosystems and livelihoods, especially of fishers who depend on fisheries as their only source of livelihood. This study examined the effects of COVID-19 and flooding on the major inland capture fisheries in Kenya to illustrate the effect of such calamities on vulnerable communities to guide interventions. Socioeconomic data were collected across the fish value chains during the peak of COVID-19 pandemic and flooding in Kenya from May to early June 2020. The measures put in place to contain COVID-19 pandemic notably dusk to dawn curfew (66%) and lock-downs (28%) in major cities that act as main fish markets were cited as the main factors that influenced fishing and fishing trade. Negative consequences reported included livelihood losses from the COVID-19 pandemic. Reduced fishing time and trips as well as a decline in consumables such as boat fuel resulted in low fish catches. Although COVID-19 pandemic affected livelihoods, the fish stocks benefited from reduction in fishing effort. Similarly flooding led to livelihood and material losses but positively impacted on stocks through expansion of fish breeding and nursery areas. The respondents recommended that governments should have disaster preparedness programs in place to address such calamities. There is also need for more detailed research on calamities that are increasing in frequency to provide information and data to guide policy and interventions.

Traditional market is a piece of urban movement which have mixed activities. At present, the management of the traditional market Indonesia is still not well implemented and a trader’s community also give impact to environmental pollution. The research objective is to analyse a solid waste generation and green open space around the traditional markets and construct map of environmental planning and management. This research was conducted at Ibuh Market (Payakumbuh) and Pandansari Market (Balikpapan). The method used in this study is to integrate environmental information resources from thematic maps, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), observation, and interviews to the management of traditional market. The results of this study indicate that Ibuh and Pandansari markets have a good environmental management especially on the reduction of waste generation because an optimal the operational of compost house and waste bank. In terms of environmental planning, the manager of Pandansari Market does not have the commitment to provide green open space and the UHI forming factors will increase where the market is surrounded by mixed buildings. At the same time, Ibuh Market has sufficient green open space and can reduce the UHI phenomenon. Furthermore, in the future the management develop a model of environmental management based less waste and eco-tourism development.

Traditional markets is not only a place for doing transactions among traders and buyers but also as a social institution that maintains the social structure of the society. Transactions conducted in traditional markets are influenced by emotional connections and social networks. The purpose of this research is to analyse the social networks typology of doing transactions in Minangkabau traditional market. This research was conducted in Agam and Tanah Datar Regencies. Data collection techniques were conducted by observation, in-depth interviews and FGD. The social networks formed are realized through trust and are maintained by the norms that exist in the society. The typologies of social networks encountered include: 1) micro social networks between traders and farmers, a bond formed because of trust, 2) meso social network, is collecting traders and sending traders, where economic actions are socially synchronized and 3) macro social networks that are built by more than two groups namely traders and agents or the destination are.
