The Cultivation of Lipid-Rich Microalgae Biomass as Anaerobic Digestate Valorization Technology—A Pilot-Scale Study

Abstract: The aim of the study was to determine the use of digestate from anaerobic digestion of dairy wastewater as a culture medium for microalgae to obtain bio-oil. The experiments were conducted at a small scale in a closed raceway pond. The efficiency of the microalgae biomass production, the digestate treatment efficiency as well as the content and properties of the bio-oil obtained from the microalgal cells were analyzed. The produced biomass concentration was about 3000 ± 10.5 mg dry biomass/L, with an average g… Show more

“…The use of these kind of culture media, wastewater in particular, has been successfully applied to meet a circular economy and reduce cost of microalgae cultivation [92]. The use of digestate from anaerobic digestion process [47,93], brewery wastewater [94], agroindustrial wastewater [95], etc., are examples of sources of culture media alternatives for microalgae production under circular economy schemes.…”

“…Chlorella vulgaris UTEX 2714 and Arthrospira platensis UTEX LB2720 originated from UTEX Culture Collection of Algae (University of Texas, Austin, USA). The biomass of microalgae was initially adapted for a period of 100 days to the liquid anaerobic digestate medium obtained from agricultural biogas plant in the hybrid photobioreactors with an active volume of 2.0 m 3 [30,31].…”

“…Efforts are still being made to improve the technological efficiency of anaerobic processes. Reactors with an innovative design have been used [ 16 , 17 ], physical factors have been implemented [ 18 , 19 ], and the pre-preparation of biodegradable pollutants [ 20 ] or the integration of anaerobic wastewater treatment with microalgae technologies has been increasingly introduced [ 21 , 22 ].…”
