The article analyses the recent studies of Russian and foreign authors in the history of the foreign policy of Galician-Volhynian Rus. In particular, the author provides an assessment of the newly established facts and circumstances referring to the conclusion of the military-political and dynastic alliance between Galician-Volhynian Prince Roman Mstislavich and Byzantine Emperor Alexios III Angelos, Daniel Galitsky's relations with German Emperor Frederick II and Austrian Duke Frederick the Belligerent, the role of Nicaea Empire and ecumenical processes of the mid-13th century in the relations between Russian princes and the Apostolic See. The paper also accesses the recent research in the history of the Mongol invasion in the SouthWest Russia, in particular, the role of local princes in the relationship with the aggressors, some episodes of conquering Berestye, Vladimir-Volhynian and Halych, the level of the source criticism and techniques used to study the texts of Russian chronicles.
