The Culex pipiens Complex in Europe

Abstract: The present study examines the mating and breeding behavior as well as the genetic differentiation of Culex pipiens biotype pipiens and Cx. pipiens biotype molestus. Firstly, the mating behavior of Cx. pipiens s.l. originating from larval populations of various epigeous and hypogeous breeding sites in Germany was examined. Autogeny was prevailing in underground populations, occasionally found in semi-open water reservoirs like drains, rarely in containers, but never in ponds and ditches. Secondly, in a multilo… Show more

“…pipiens biotype molestus , of which the latter fulfils certain criteria that separates it from the other: it does not hibernate in winter (homodynamic), it utilizes underground larval habitat (hypogeous), it can mate in confined spaces (stenogamous), it can lay its first egg batch without a blood meal (autogenous), and it feeds on humans (mammophilic). Culex pipiens biotype molestus has been reported from many central and southern European countries but never from Scandinavia [14]. Hybridisation of the two biotypes is quite common in the Mediterranean area, while hybrids are less commonly found in central Europe [3, 4].…”

“…Traditionally, pipiens and molestus forms showed allopatric distributions (above‐ground vs underground) in northern latitudes of Europe and the U.S.A. (Huang et al ). However, recent studies in The Netherlands and Germany found both forms and hybrids in the same breeding sites (Reusken et al , Rudolf et al ), suggesting a broader sympatric distribution in Europe, although to a lesser extent than in southern latitudes and a more distinct choice of larval habitats, conditioned by climatic conditions (Becker et al ). Hybridization between molestus and pipiens forms may result in a more opportunistic feeding behavior, which may potentiate the role of Cx.…”
