The CUBES science case

Abstract: We introduce the scientific motivations for the development of the Cassegrain U-Band Efficient Spectrograph (CUBES) that is now in construction for the Very Large Telescope. The assembled cases span a broad range of contemporary topics across Solar System, Galactic and extragalactic astronomy, where observations are limited by the performance of current ground-based spectrographs shortwards of 400 nm. A brief background to each case is presented and specific technical requirements on the instrument design that… Show more

“…2. 4 The VLT/ELT gateway CUBES will be one of the first instruments to adopt ELT-SW framework and standards, which will be used to develop and control all the future ESO/ELT instruments. But the CUBES instrument operates in a VLT environment (Paranal observatory), hence the communications between CUBES and its environment needs to be mediated by a dedicated software component, dubbed VLT / ELT gateway.…”

“…The ETC modelling approach is coherent to that developed by the E2E simulator ( § 6) as confirmed by the several and careful comparisons between the E2E and ETC for several reference input configurations. The reliable computation of SNR λ in a variety of observing conditions, has provided a valuable tool for the astronomical community to explore the wide range of science cases that CUBES aims to address (see [4]).…”
