The CTA sensitivity to Lorentz-violating effects on the gamma-ray horizon

Abstract: Abstract. The arrival of TeV-energy photons from distant galaxies is expected to be affected by their QED interaction with intergalactic radiation fields through electron-positron pair production. In theories where high-energy photons violate Lorentz symmetry, the kinematics of the process γ + γ → e + + e − is altered and the cross-section suppressed. Consequently, one would expect more of the highest-energy photons to arrive if QED is modified by Lorentz violation than if it is not. We estimate the sensitivit… Show more

“…Murase et al 2012a). Opportunity would arise for tests of non standard physics such as violations of the Lorentz invariance (Fairbairn et al 2014) or the speculated existence of axion-like particles (Meyer & Conrad 2014), once the number of these multi-TeV photon factories should become greater than now. Therefore EHBL will be very interesting targets for challenging hot topics in fundamental physics, both with the ASTRI/CTA MiniArray (improving the current H.E.S.S.…”

“…In the literature, expressions for the optical depth, derived with two alternative assumptions, are given by Jacob & Piran (2008) and Fairbairn et al (2014). In both works, the modified dispersion relation that is given in Eq.…”

“…The treatments of Jacob & Piran (2008) and Fairbairn et al (2014) differ from the assumptions made to further derive the expression for the optical depth τ γγ (see the Appendix for more details). Jacob & Piran (2008) assume the standard formula (e.g., Dweck & Krennrich 2012) and that the functional form of the cross-section, which in the standard case can be expressed as a function of the ratio / min , still holds at energies where LIV effects begin to be significant.…”

“…Astroparticle physics has been proposed as an appropriate test environment for possible Lorentz Invariance Violation (LIV) given the large energy of the particles, the large propagation distances, the accumulation of small interaction effects and recently the precision of the measurements (Liberati & Maccione (2009) ;Stecker & Scully (2005; Amelino-Camelia et al (1998); Jacobson et al (2003); Galaverni & Sigl (2008a,b); Xu & Ma (2016); Chang et al (2016); Ellis & Mavromatos (2013); The MAGIC Collaboration (2008); Ellis et al (2006Ellis et al ( , 2008; Fairbairn et al (2014); Biteau & Williams (2015); Tavecchio & Bonnoli (2016); Rubtsov et al (2017)). …”
