The crystal structure of beta dithiane disulphoxide

Abstract: The crystal structure of 1.4 dithiane fl disulphoxide has been determined and refined by two-dimensional Fourier series and difference syntheses using data obtained by copper X-radiation. The molecule is in the chair configuration and the oxygen atoms are cis to one another. The bond distances are S-C 1.78, C-C 1.47 and S-O 1.42 /~, and the C-S-O bond angle is 110%

“…Bond lengths and valency angles agree with values reported previously. In the investigated structure the lengths of the Csp,--S bonds are 1.836 (10), 1.819 (14), 1.803 (10) and 1.785 (10)/~ and in spite of the spread of about 50 they are within the bond-length range found previously for a number of compounds (Montgomery, 1960;Kalff & Romers, 1965, 1966Marsh, 1955;Carey, Smith, Maher & Bryan, 1977;McPhail, Onan & Koskimies, 1976;Bukowska-Strzy~ewska & Pniewska, 1979a,b;Chao & McCullough, 1960;Kobayashi & Iitaka, 1977). Literature values for the Csp3-S bonds are in the range 1.770 (30)-1.843 (2)/~,.…”

“…The very small value [1.444 (11)A] for the C(5)-C(6) bond length in (Ib) was unexpected, but is consistent with values for other bonds between CH 2 groups attached to two sulfurs or oxygens in a sixmembered ring: 1.44 A [trans-2,3-dibromo-1,4-dioxin (Altona, Knobler & Romers, 1963)], 1.47 A [trans-2,3-dichloro-l,4-dithiin (Kalff & Romers, 1965); 1,4dithiin 1,4-dioxide (Montgomery, 1960)], 1.50-1.51 A [cis-and trans-2,3-dichloro-l,4-dJoxin (Altona & Romers, 1963)].…”

“…S-C(sp 3) bond lengths for molecule (IIa) are 1.784 (10), 1.833 (8), 1.791 (11), 1.814 (9)A, and for molecule (lib) 1.791(8), 1.823(10), 1.838(10), 1.873 (12) A. Except for the clearly elongated bond S(14)-C(13) = 1.873 (12) /k in molecule (IIa), the values are similar to those for analogous bonds in other known structures, where they range from 1.770 (30) to 1.843 (2) /k (Montgomery, 1960;Kalff & Romers, 1965, 1966Marsh, 1955;Carey, Smith, Maher & Bryan, 1977;McPhail, Onan & Koskimies, 1976;Bukowska-Strzy~ewska & Pniewska, 1979a,b;Chao & McCullough, 1960;Kobayashi & Iitaka, 1977).…”
