The Crystal Field for Nd3+ in Garnets

Abstract: A crystal field analysis of the reported optical spectra of NdS+ in the series of aluminium and gallium garnets LuAG, YAG, GGG, LuGG, and YGG is presented. The reliability of the crystal field parameters determined in this way is confirmed by comparison with ESR g-values given in the literature. The results obtained represent a basis for a further study of the relation between the crystal field parameters of rare earths in garnets and the structure of the coordination dodecahedron. “…Equation (11) can be viewed as the quadratic equation of a quadric surface (an ellipsoid centred at the origin) in the k-space. We replace it by a sphere of the same volume, assuming From equations (14) and (11), the relation with the maximum splitting is found to be 3. Discussion of the approximation.…”

“…In figure 2 experimental points for AE(4I9/2) versus N,(Bq) from Bq' of the literature [12][13][14][15][16][17] are compared to the equation (15) line. One can notice that a fit would keep the slope of the line but would give a positive intercept on AE.…”

“…la, 2) and magnetization data; (ii) Kramers doublet (~d~+ , yb3+). Ail sets of CF parameters available for ~d~+ in different gallium garnets [5] describe well the magnetization of NdGG. The calculated MLB which is the same for all these sets, is in qualitative agreement with NdGG data (Figs.…”
