The cadmium β-diketonate complexes Cd(RCOCHCOR′)2 (R = CH3, R′ = CH3; R = CF3 R′ = CH3, i-C3H7, i-C4H9, t-C4H9, C6H5, 2-naphthyl) can be prepared in good yield by the direct room temperature electrochemical oxidation of the metal into a solution of the parent diketone in acetonitrile. Adducts of the type Cd(RCOCHCOR′)2L (L = 2,2′-bipyridine, 1,10-phenanthroline, N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylethylenediamine) can be prepared insitu, or by subsequent addition of the ligand to the electrolytic solution. X-ray studies show that the molecular structure of both Cd(acac)2phen and Cd(CF3COCHCOC6H5)2phen is based on a CdO4N2 kernel, distorted from octahedral stereochemistry by the bite of the ligands.

The interaction of 3,6-di-tert-butyl-o-benzoquinone (3,6-Q) with indium in toluene leads to the tris-o-semiquinolate derivative (3,6-SQ)(3)In (3,6-SQ - radical-anion of 3,6-Q). According to single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, this complex has a trigonal prismatic structure. Magnetic measurements revealed that the exchange interactions between odd electrons of the paramagnetic ligands in (3,6-SQ)(3)In are antiferromagnetic in character. The treatment of (3,6-SQ)(3)In with 2,2'-dipyridyl (Dipy) causes the displacement of one o-quinone ligand and the formation of the (3,6-SQ)In(Dipy)(3,6-Cat) (3,6-Cat - dianion of 3,6-Q) derivative containing mixed charged o-quinoid ligands. The reaction of InI with (3,6-SQ)K in THF solution is accompanied by a redox process and the potassium-indium(iii) catecholate derivative was obtained as a result. The oxidation of InI with 3,6-Q in THF produces the dimeric In(iii) iodo-catecholate complex [(3,6-Cat)(2)In·2THF]InI(2). The same derivative can be synthesized by the interaction of indium metal with a mixture of I(2) and 3,6-Q.

This paper is dedicated to Professor Ronald J . Gillespie on the occasion of his 65th birthday THEODORE A. ANNAN and DENNIS G. TUCK. Can. J. Chem. 67, 1807Chem. 67, (1989. Tin reacts with tetrahalogeno-o-benzoquinones X4C6O2 (X = C1, Br) in refluxing toluene to give the tin(1V) catecholato species Sn(02C6X4)2, and neutral and anionic derivatives have also been obtained. A mixture of Sn + X4C602-o + 12 + I, 10-phenanthroline (phen) yields SnIz(02C6X4)phen. With gallium or indium (= M), the corresponding experiments give derivatives of M" (e.g., [M(OzC6X4)phen]2), or M"' (e.g., MI(02C6X4)phen). Intermediate paramagnetic species were detected in the case of In/Cl4C602-0/;12, and a reaction mechanism involving one-electron transfer processes is proposed on the basis of these results. Solvated crystals of the compound InC1(02C6C14)(C6H7N)3 were obtained from CH2C12 solution, and the structure of this molecule has been determined by X-ray crystallographic methods.Key words: gallium, indium, tin, benzoquinones, oxidation. phCnanthroline-l,l0 (phen) fournit du Sn12(02C6X4)phen. Dans le cas de la reaction du Inlo-CI4C6O2/iI2, on a detect6 la presence d'intermkdiaires paramagnttiques et, sur la base de ces resultats, on propose un mecanisme rtactionnel impliquant des processus de transfer-par un tlectron. En utilisant une solution de CH2C12, on a isole des cristaux solvatCs du InC1(02C6C14)(C6H7N)3 et, faisant appel a des mCthodes de diffraction des rayons-X, on a dttermint la structure de cette moltcule.
