The crystal and molecular structure of a calcium salt of guanylyl-3',5'-cytidine (GpC)

Abstract: The calcium salt, Ca(C19H24NaOI2P)2.18H20, of guanylyl-3',5'-cytidine (GpC) has been refined to an R of 8.2 % for 2918 observed reflections (11% for 4237 reflections, including unobserved). The molecule crystallized in space group P2~ with a= 21 "224, b = 34"207, c= 9"327/~,, fl= 90.527 °, Z= 4. The asymmetric unit contains four GpC, 36 waters and two Ca 2+ ions, for a total of 198 non-hydrogen atoms. The four GpC occur as two dimers related by a pseudo C-face-centering. Each dimer consists of two crystallogra… Show more

“…Two nucleotide structures containing the Ca 2÷ ion have been solved, Ca-GpC (Hingerty, Subramanian, Stellman, Sato, Broyde & Langridge, 1976) and Ca-5'-TMP (Trueblood, 1961), but in these cases the Ca 2+ cation binds to the phosphate moiety as a counter ion. Therefore, the present complex is the first example of direct binding of Ca 2÷ to cytosine base.…”

“…T The mean values of dinucleotides in the stacked state are derived from GpC-Ca (four observations) (Hingerty, Subramanian, Stellman, Sato, Broyde & Langridge, 1976); GpC-Na (Rosenberg, Seeman, Day & Rich, 1976); ApU1 and ApU2 (Seeman, Rosenberg, Suddath, Kim & Rich, 1976) and the ApA ÷ part of Ap+Ap+A (Suck, Manor & Saenger, 1976).…”
