The crystal structure of [Ca(C4HsN30)C12] .H20 was determined by X-ray diffraction. The complex crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2~/c with a = 7.410(1), b = 16.152(2), c = 8.351 (1) A, fl = 107.60 (2) ° and Z = 4. The final R value is 0.070. The Ca 2+ cation is in a pentagonal-bipyramidal environment and is coordinated in the basal plane by two CI atoms, the N(3) and 0(2) atoms of a cytosine base, and 0567-7408/80/081793-05501.00 the 0(2) atom of an adjacent cytosine base. The axial sites are occupied by a C1 atom and an H20 molecule.

Chimeric RNAs have been recognized as a phenomenon not unique to cancer cells. They also exist in normal physiology. Aging is often characterized by deregulation of molecular and cellular mechanisms, including loss of heterochromatin, increased transcriptional noise, less tight control on alternative splicing, and more stress-induced changes. It is thus assumed that chimeric RNAs are more abundant in older people. In this study, we conducted a preliminary investigation to identify any chimeric RNAs with age-based trends in their expression levels in blood samples. A chimeric RNA candidate list generated by bioinformatic analysis indicated the possibility of both negative and positive trends in the expression of chimeric RNAs. Out of this candidate list, five novel chimeric RNAs were successfully amplified in multiple blood samples and then sequenced. Although primary smaller sample sizes displayed some weak trends with respect to age, analysis of quantitative PCR data from larger sample sizes showed essentially no relationship between expression levels and age. Altogether, these results indicate that, contradictory to the common assumption, chimeric RNAs as a group are not all higher in older individuals and that placing chimeric RNAs in the context of aging will be a much more complex task than initially anticipated.

Sodium uridine-5'-O-methylphosphate-methanol, CmHI4N209PNa.CH3OH (mpU.CHaOH), crystallizes with two molecules in a monoclinic unit cell in space group P2~: a = 7.904 (4), b = 14.903 (7), c = 7.271 (4) A, fl = 103.74 (4) ° at 20°C. Diffractometer data (1197 significant reflexions, Mo Ka radiation) were collected at room temperature. The structure was solved by Patterson methods and refined by least squares (R~ = 2.5%). The uracil base has the anti orientation (X = 79.1 °) with respect to the sugar. The ribose ring has an S-type [C(2')-endo] conformation with a pseudorotation phase angle P = 166-4 ° and (~max --36"9°. The orientation of the methyl ester phosphate group is g+ (gauche-gauche) with respect to O(1') and C(3').Base stacking is absent; nevertheless, the backbone assumes a right-handed helical arrangement. A detailed description of the phosphodiester geometry is given.
