Impacts of Gender Inequality on Human Development Index in Asia: A Panel Data Fixed Effect Regression

Gender inequality is a big issue in Asia. The objective of this study is to explain empirically how gender inequality affects the human enlargement index in Asian countries based on the panel data from 1990-2018. We utilized panel data Fixed Effect regression in this study to quantify the impacts of gender inequality on human development across Asian countries. The selection of the Fixed Effects Model has been made after the Hausman test results. The results of the study expose that gender inequality significantly contributed to both the human development index and the non-income human development index but their relationship is negative. As for as the control variables are concerned, working population and trade openness positively contributed towards human development while inflation and unemployment negatively contributed towards human development in Asia.

Purpose Leadership literature has identified that the servant leadership style can reduce employee negative work outcomes, even in challenging work environments like the health-care sector as nurses play an important role in the performance of a hospital. That is why, the efficiency and effectiveness of the nurses are believed to be directly linked to improved health benefits to the public. So, this study aims to investigate the inter-relationship between servant leadership, organizational justice and workplace deviance of nurses in public sector hospitals. Design/methodology/approach A self-administrated questionnaire using a drop-and-collect method was used for collecting the data from nurses working in the public sector hospitals of Pakistan using a convenient sampling technique. In total, 370 questionnaires were distributed among the nursing staff, of which 201 completed and usable questionnaires were returned and used for data analysis. Further, the partial least squares structural equation modeling approach is used in this study using SmartPLS version 3 software to test the hypothesized model and determine the direct and indirect effects. Findings Results showed a negative relationship between servant leadership and workplace deviance, positive relationship between servant leadership and organizational justice, negative relationship between organizational justice and workplace deviance and that organizational justice mediates in the relationship between servant leadership and workplace deviance. Practical implications This study provides valuable recommendations and practical implications to address the nurses’ deviant workplace behaviors in the public sector hospitals of Pakistan. Originality/value This study is novel as it shows the significance of servant leadership behavior which has the ability to positively influence organizational justice perception leading to less likelihood of the emergence of nurses’ deviant workplace behavior, specifically in the context of public sector hospitals of Pakistan.

A pilot study of offering a positive disciplining module for public school teachers in Hyderabad, Pakistan: A quasi‐experimental study

A pilot quasi-experimental study was conducted in which participants in the intervention group (n = 31) received positive learning environment through Positive Disciplining (PLEPD) module, while those in the control group (n = 29) received routine training. Teachers' knowledge and attitude regarding corporal punishment (CP) and Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) were measured before (T0), immediately after (T1) and 3 months after the intervention (T2). Descriptive analysis and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to describe participants' characteristics and mean scores for knowledge and attitude among teachers. A total of 60 teachers completed the 16 hours training module. The overall response rate was >90%. Most participants recommended increasing the overall duration of the programme by reducing 4 to 2 hours per day, thus, increasing the period from 4 to 8 days of training. There were no differences between control and intervention groups at baseline regarding participant characteristics (p= > .05). The difference in depression (F = .0863, p = .357) and knowledge and attitude (F = 1.589, p = .213) scores among groups were not statistically significant. However, the mean score for knowledge and attitude followed a positive trend, increasing depression mean scores at T1 and T2. A positive disciplining programme is a feasible school intervention for public schools and may effectively reduce depression to ensure overall well-being.
