The Creative Journey of Grounded Theory Analysis: A Guide to its Principles and Applications

Abstract: Abstract. Grounded theory analysis is a method widely used by qualitative researchers. This method interprets empirical materials to formulate a theory about a particular social phenomenon. In this article, we describe the steps of grounded theory method, which comprises open coding of the material followed by the grouping of open codes into categories that are increasingly abstracted to capture the essential meaning of the phenomenon. This depiction is offered as a set of explicit guidelines for researchers i… Show more

“…Grounded theory analysis (GTA; Glaser & Strauss, ; Glaser, ; Strauss & Corbin, ; see also Dourdouma & Moertl, ) is a flexible approach that allows the researcher to generate a theory of the phenomenon under investigation through the exploratory examination of the informants. GTA is ‘an inductive interpretive process used to explore subjective experiences for the purposes of theory generation’ (Pascual‐Leone, Rodriguez‐Rubio, & Metler, , p. 582).…”

“…These meaning units were organised into descriptive categories, which, according to the theory, are called codes . This is the process of open coding and is considered the heart of the method (Dourdouma & Moertl, ). The codes are grounded in the data and are formed by the participants' words.…”
