Objectives Tooth loss is a phenomenon associated with structural and functional changes, with a negative influence on the oral and general health of an individual. Removable dental prosthesis is commonly fabricated as treatment for tooth loss. However, the perceptions and experiences of individuals during the transition from a dentate to a partially or completely edentulous state and their acceptance of the denture are largely ignored. The objective of this study was to explore the perceptions and experiences during the transition from a dentate state to being partially or completely edentulous in the Indian population. Methods Fifteen individuals wearing partial or complete denture prosthesis were interviewed in depth using open-ended questions. These interviews were recorded using a voice-recording device. They were then transcribed, and a coding process was applied using the thematic framework approach to qualitative analysis. Findings Five themes emerged, namely: (i) Transition from dentulous to partially or completely edentulous state; (ii) Varying experiences with the use of dentures; (iii) Convenience and duration of wearing dentures; (iv) Attitude of dentists towards patients’ complaints; (v) Knowledge and preference of available treatment modalities. Conclusions The loss of natural teeth seemed to affect the psychological, functional, and social well-being of participants. Tooth loss was believed to be a natural aging process. Costs of treatment deterred the uptake of fixed denture treatment options. However, some participants preferred removable dentures to fixed prosthesis.

Moreover, the self-perceived denture need may be influenced by cultural aspects, beliefs and values regarding tooth loss, which is often seen as a natural part of aging [13]. Background: To evaluate the direct association and oral impact-mediated association between a reduced dentition and the self-perceived need for complete dentures (CD) in dentate adults. Methods: Data from the Brazilian National Oral Health Survey (2010) were analyzed. Self-perceived need for complete dentures was investigated by the question "Do you think you need to wear CD?". The hierarchical dental functional classification defined reduced dentitions: at least one tooth in each arch, 10 teeth in each arch, 12 anterior teeth, posterior occluding pairs (POPs) of premolars (≥3) and molars (≥1 bilateral). Presence of all these criteria were defined as functional dentition (FDClassV). Oral impacts were assessed using the Oral Impacts on Daily Performances scale. Associations were investigated using logistic regression and structural equations. Results: FD(ClassV) was associated with less self-perceived need for CD both directly (p<0.001) and mediated by oral impacts (p=0.003). Dentitions without molar POPs were associated with the outcome mediated by oral impacts (p=0.002). Individuals with 10 teeth in each arch (with or without anterior teeth and POPs) had similar frequencies of self-perceived denture needs. Individuals with <10 teeth in each arch and 12 posterior teeth did not have a higher frequency of self-perceived denture need. Conclusions: Oral impacts mediated the association between reduced dentitions and self-perceived denture needs. Clinical relevance: Individuals with tooth loss may report need for CD, even when they have dental configurations compatible with functionality. The dentist must taken into account patient-centered measures to make decision about oral health prevention and treatment.

Purpose: This study aimed to assess the change in the maximum bite force of completely edentulous patients rehabilitated with thermoplastic acrylic complete denture after placement of single implant-retained mandibular overdentures. Materials and Methods: Sixteen completely edentulous patients with age ranged from 50-60 years were selected from removable prosthodontic clinics, faculty of dental medicine, Al-Azhar University. Each patient received a thermoplastic acrylic complete denture. Three months after a new denture placement, bite force was evaluated using an occlusal force meter (GM10, Nagano Keiki, Japan). Each patient received a mid-symphyseal single dental implant, 10 mm length and 3.7mm diameter (Dentis, Dalseo-gu, Daegu , Korea) placed at the midline of the mandibular alveolar ridge. Two weeks after overdenture placement, bite force was evaluated to assess the changes in bite force after a single implant placement. Results: Bite force was increased considerably after single implant placement. It was significantly higher than the bite force recorded with a conventional thermoplastic complete denture. Conclusion: It was concluded that using immediate loading single implant-retained mandibular overdentures resulted in considerable improvement of bite force in completely edentulous patients.Completely edentulous patients with complete dentures are experiencing various issues with their dentures, mostly regarding the mandibular denture, for example diminished stability and retention Codex : 08/21.
