The coupling of a reflectron time-of-flight mass spectrometer with a cosmic simulation chamber: A powerful new tool for laboratory astrophysics

Abstract: a b s t r a c tThe addition of an orthogonal reflectron time-of-flight mass spectrometer (ReTOF-MS) to the NASA Ames cosmic simulation chamber (CSC) experiment is described. The simulation chamber contains the elements that produce the molecular species under astrophysically relevant conditions. A pulsed discharge nozzle (PDN) produces ions, neutrals and radicals in a plasma discharge, which are then expanded and supersonically cooled into the chamber. The coupling of the ReTOF-MS to the CSC provides real-time… Show more

“…Gas phase analyses: In the THS, a reflectron Time-of-Flight mass spectrometer (TOF-MS) is coupled to the PDN to monitor in situ the products of the chemistry (Ricketts et al 2011). By using polarized skimmers that attract the plasma-generated ions present in the expansion, we can directly detect the ions in the TOF-MS without fragmenting them.…”

“…In the study presented here, we used the Titan Haze Simulation (THS) experiment, an experimental setup developed at the NASA Ames COSmIC simulation facility, to study Titan's atmospheric chemistry at low temperature (Ricketts et al (2011)). In the THS, the chemistry is simulated by plasma in the stream of a pulsed supersonic jetcooled expansion.…”

“…Very little was known until recently about the formation of cosmic dust due to the difficulty of forming and isolating these large species and in tracking their evolutionary path under realistic astrophysical laboratory conditions. Efforts have been attempted in this direction leading to new laboratory tools and breakthrough results (Jager et al 2007;Ricketts et al 2011). Carbon pyrolysis and plasma-induced combustion experiments on mixtures of small hydrocarbons indicate that the product distribution is dominated by PAHs and partially hydrogenated PAHs.…”
