The Counteracting Performance of Phytoconstituents Against Neurodegeneration Involved in Parkinson's Disease

Abstract: Parkinson's disease (PD) is age associated neurodegenerative disorder of the central nervous system. The PD is marked by selective degeneration of dopamine neuron in the specific part of brain called substaintia nigra which leads to several motor and non-motor symptoms. The cause of diseases rests uncertain, however the factors like oxidative stress, aggregation of alpha-synuclein protein, mitochondrial dysfunction, neuroinflammation and many others contribute in development of Parkinson's disease. The current… Show more

“…Oxidative stress is imbalance between reactive oxygen species and antioxidant system. 17 Numerous studies have demonstrated the involvement of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and nitric oxide synthases (NOS) in the pathogenesis of psoriasis. The imbalance in redox status and elevated levels of inducible NOS contribute to the generation of oxidative stress, which can result in various molecular abnormalities.…”

“…Treatment options for PD include levodopa, dopamine agonists, COMT-inhibitors, anticholinergics, MAO inhibitors, and amantadine. 11 Growth factors have demonstrated potential in neuroprotection for PD, including BDNF and glial cell-derived growth factor. A new generation of nucleic acid constructions has also appeared, capable of silencing α-synuclein, a protein associated with PD.…”
