Homopolymers and copolymers of vinyl fluoride are inert. They possess unique chemical and weather resistance characteristics in addition to good mechanical properties. These polymers have excellent release properties from adhesives such as epoxies. They can also be rendered adherable by flame and corona discharge techniques. These attributes have spurred the application of poly(vinyl fluoride) films and coatings in indoor and outdoor functional and decorative uses. This article provides a review of methods of manufacture, properties, polymerization chemistry, fabrication techniques, applications, and economy of these polymers.
