The Cost of Wind: Negative Economic Effects of Global Wind Energy Development

Abstract: This paper provides a structured literature review of the negative economic effects associated with the development of wind energy and synthesized the evidence at an abstract level. We then developed an analytical framework to systematically review economic issues such as volatility, electricity price, housing values, and unemployment in relation to wind energy. Global wind energy development data from the time period from 2000 through 2019 were included for a more robust analysis. This period encompasses the … Show more

“…The real transmission of an approved quantity of energy is then shifted toward the physical layer after the choice on the energy trade parameter is made in virtual layer. The electricity system now imposes strict restrictions on energy interchange across its network (Dorrell and Lee, 2020). As a result, if the virtual layer platform's decision-making process ignores the possible impacts of P2P energy in physical platform, the energy transmission opens a wide range of technological limitations.…”

“…Other important variables to be considered are weather conditions, the regional correlation between them, and their effect on the generation mix. Moreover, regional disparities can be extremely relevant to the social dimension of the problem, as already discussed in the case of employment [94] and property values [95,96].…”

“…The average global annual growth in the total installed wind power capacity in the last ten years was over 25% per year [4]. The worldwide cumulative installed wind power capacity was 198 GW in 2010, and it passed 600 GW in 2020 [5,6]. There are novel solutions such as high-temperature superconducting generators, novel horizontal/vertical axis wind turbine designs, and unconventional configurations to address the implementation of wind harnessing in low-wind speed areas [4,[7][8][9][10][11][12][13].…”
