The cost of being valuable: predictors of extinction risk in marine invertebrates exploited as luxury seafood

Abstract: Extinction risk has been linked to biological and anthropogenic variables. Prediction of extinction risk in valuable fauna may not follow mainstream drivers when species are exploited for international markets. We use results from an International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List assessment of extinction risk in all 377 known species of sea cucumber within the order Aspidochirotida, many of which are exploited worldwide as luxury seafood for Asian markets. Extinction risk was primarily driven by high … Show more

“…In marine ecosystems, however, the market values of some invertebrates correlate strongly with their risk of extinction, e.g. invertebrate species considered luxury seafood (Purcell et al 2014 ), providing an exception to the general trend for greater threat to be observed in larger-sized species.…”

“…Between 1996 and 2011, the number of countries serving the Chinese sea cucumber market expanded from 35 to 83 and over 90% of the world's tropical coastline now lies within countries that export sea cucumbers to Hong Kong . This surge in consumption has had significant effects for countries that supply the market (Eriksson and Clarke, 2015), and seven traded species are endangered (Purcell et al, 2014b). Globally, at least 38% of sea cucumber fisheries are considered overfished and 24 countries have closed or attempted to close their sea cucumber fisheries due to overfishing (Purcell et al, 2013).…”
