This review presents, in a self-consistent manner, those analytical tools that are relevant for the analysis of the physics of CMB anisotropies generated in different theoretical models of the early Universe. After introducing the physical foundations of the Sachs-Wolfe effect, the origin and evolution of the scalar, tensor and vector modes of the geometry is treated in both gauge-invariant and gauge-dependent descriptions. Some of the recent progresses in the theory of cosmological perturbations are scrutinized with particular attention to their implications for the adiabatic and isocurvature paradigms, whose description is reviewed both within conventional fluid approaches and within the the Einstein-Boltzmann treatment. Open problems and theoretical challenges for a unified theory of the early Universe are outlined in light of their implications for the generation of large-scale anisotropies in the CMB sky and in light of the generation of stochastic backgrounds of relic gravitons between few Hz and the GHz.

Separating the early universe from the late universe: Cosmological parameter estimation beyond the black box

We present a method for measuring the cosmic matter budget without assumptions about speculative Early Universe physics, and for measuring the primordial power spectrum P * (k) nonparametrically, either by combining CMB and LSS information or by using CMB polarization. Our method complements currently fashionable "black box" cosmological parameter analysis, constraining cosmological models in a more physically intuitive fashion by mapping measurements of CMB, weak lensing and cluster abundance into k-space, where they can be directly compared with each other and with galaxy and Lyα forest clustering. Including the new CBI results, we find that CMB measurements of P (k) overlap with those from 2dF galaxy clustering by over an order of magnitude in scale, and even overlap with weak lensing measurements. We describe how our approach can be used to raise the ambition level beyond cosmological parameter fitting as data improves, testing rather than assuming the underlying physics.

The field of nuclear astrophysics addresses the nature of the nuclear reactions, and reaction sequences that generate stellar energy and drive the evolution of stellar life from birth to death. The field also addresses the origin of the elements, during the evolution of our universe from its beginning 13.7 billion years ago to the present time. Nuclear reaction processes represent the engine for the evolution of stars and the chemical evolution of our universe. The light from distant stellar objects provides us with the information that tests the theories and guides the experiments of the nuclear astrophysics community. Thus light observed today allows us to look back into the past and to unravel the evolution of our universe. In this article we provide an overview of selected astrophysical sources of light and what they tell us about the history of our universe. Light from our SunWithout light from our sun and far distant stars, the earth would be cold and dark. Our sun provides the light and heat that drive the evolution of our planet, it is the key to climate evolution, and provides the energy for most of the geo-chemical and bio-chemical processes that make earth a habitable planet. Light is radiated from the outer atmosphere -the photosphere -of the sun, having an average temperature of about 5500°C. The energy heating the solar surface is, however, generated deep in the solar interior through nuclear fusion and is being transported by radiative and convective processes to the solar surface. The light reaches earth with the characteristic Planck blackbody distribution from the ultraviolet to the infrared
