The correlation of resistance exercise-induced myostatin with insulin resistance and plasma cytokines in healthy young men

Abstract: It seems that a circuit RE bout by reducing HOMA-IR and changing plasma cytokines (decreased IL-6 and increased IL-10) can decrease plasma level of MSTN in healthy young men. In other word, the beneficial effect of acute RE may be reflected by changes in MSTN in healthy young individuals.

“…Nevertheless, it appears that the hepatic insulin resistance revealed by IR HOMA as well as the rise of plasma glucose and insulin in the early phase of OGTT is relatively less in RES compared with SIE. This is in agreement with recent findings of a reduction in IR HOMA 24 hours following a circuit resistance exercise program [28]. Moreover, despite the difference in the increase in Cederholm and Gutt indices between RES and SIE not achieving statistical significance level, the increase in peripheral insulin sensitivity from the CON level tends to be higher following RES (Cohen's d effect size: Cederholm 0.5, Gutt 0.5) than SIE (0.36, 0.43).…”

“…It is abundantly expressed in skeletal muscles, but is also expressed to a lesser extent in cardiac muscles and fat tissues (McPherron et al, 1997; Sharma et al, 1999). Myostatin levels in the plasma of healthy young men has been shown to significantly decrease within 24 h post-exercise when compared to pre-exercise and has also been shown to positively correlate with plasma IL-6 (Kazemi, 2016). In contrast, serum myostatin has been shown to increase in patients with spinal cord injury after aerobic exercise (Han et al, 2016).…”

“…Literature has characterized the influence of exercise on myostatin concentration as ambiguous. Kazemi et al reported that a single session of high-volume circuit resistance training resulted in a significant decrease in plasma myostatin 24 h after exercise [ 38 ]. Contrarily, according to Willoughby et al, a single session of eccentric muscle actions caused an increase in serum myostatin concentration with peak values recorded 24 h post exercise [ 39 ].…”
