The correlation between serum total alkaline phosphatase and bone mineral density in young adults

Abstract: Background Elevated total alkaline phosphatase (T-ALP) levels are usually indicative of enhanced osteoblastic activity and bone conversion status and are thus considered as a key factor needed for fresh bone mineralization and synthesis. To date, there is no consistent conclusion on the association between the serum T-ALP levels and bone mineral density (BMD). Therefore, the present study focused on exploring the association of serum T-ALP with lumbar BMD among young adults. … Show more

“…These osteoblasts proliferate in a feedback manner and synthesize a large amount of bone alkaline phosphatase (BALP), significantly increasing serum ALP levels. [20] Our research, based on a nationally representative sample, is highly relevant to the U.S. population. Additionally, the large sample size enabled subgroup analysis, reporting correlations between serum levels of ALP and pelvic BMD across sex, age, and racial/ethnic groups.…”

“…According to research, extracellular pyrophosphate, which is an inhibitor of mineral formation, and inorganic phosphate local rates are both increased by ALP, which promotes mineralization (61). Total alkaline phosphatase levels are actually shown to be a measure of increased osteoblastic activity and bone conversion status (62). According to a study by Takeda et al, four weeks of lutein treatment significantly increased the mass of the femoral bones, particularly the cortical bone.…”

“…21,22 Total ALP and bone-specific ALP are byproducts generated during bone remodeling and reflect the bone turnover rate. 23 Additionally, total serum ALP level is considered a potential biomarker of bone formation 20 and can help assess the presence or absence of osteoporosis. 19 However, the relationship between serum total ALP and BMD is controversial, and there is no research on the effect of egg consumption on serum ALP levels.…”
