The Correlation between Selenium Dependent Glutathione Peroxidase Activity and Oxidant/Antioxidant Balance in Sera of Diabetic Patients with Nephropathy

Abstract: Background: Oxidative stress is an imbalance between free radical's production and the body's ability to counteract or detoxify their harmful effects through neutralization by antioxidants, oxidative stress is thought to be involved in the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy. One of the key enzymatic antioxidants is glutathione peroxidase (GPx), which plays an important protective function in diabetes complications, by reducing the rising state of oxidative stress and removing toxicity from peroxides and conv… Show more

“…Similarly, there were no significant differences in genes related to oxidative stress, including GSH-PX family members GPX1, GPX4, GPX7 , and GPX8 . GSH-PX is a key enzyme antioxidant that protects cells from oxidative damage by reducing the rising state of oxidative stress, eliminating the toxicity of peroxide, and transforming it into a non-toxic substance ( 30 ). Additionally, ROS can also act as a signal molecule to transcriptionally activate the apoptosis signaling pathways, promote intestinal inflammatory response, and start the intestinal cell apoptosis program ( 31 ).…”

“…During the diabetic condition, a decreased GPx activity was reported. 57 The over-accumulation of hydroxyl radicals and depleted antioxidants are the major factors of oxidative stress. 58 Here, our present findings represented that the GDM animals displayed increased MDA and decreased SOD, CAT, GST, and GPx activities.…”

“…The biochemical function of glutathione peroxidase is to reduce lipid hydroperoxides to their corresponding alcohols and reduce free hydrogen peroxide to water. Low levels of GPx observed in type 2 diabetes are associated with macroalbuminuria, which was correlated to the stage of diabetic nephropathy 34 . The Glutathione peroxidase results were given in Table 16 and Figure 16.…”
