The Correlation between Functional Connectivity of the Primary Somatosensory Cortex and Cervical Spinal Cord Microstructural Injury in Patients with Cervical Spondylotic Myelopathy

Abstract: Objectives. To explore functional connectivity reorganization of the primary somatosensory cortex, the chronic microstructure damage of the cervical spinal cord, and their relationship in cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) patients. Methods. Thirty-three patients with CSM and 23 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited for rs-fMRI and cervical spinal cord diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) scans. Six subregions (including leg, back, chest, hand, finger and face) of bilateral primary somatosensory cortex (S1) were … Show more

“…After surgery, Cobb's angle of scoliosis (5.10 ± 0.32) and PI-LL (13.92 ± 0.37) in the study group were lower than those before surgery (P < 0.05, Table 3). VAS score [4] 0 is the best, the patient has no pain 1-3 points or less is mild pain that can be tolerated 4-6 points: e pain is more severe, and the patient's sleep is slightly affected 7-10 points are unbearable severe pain, the patient cannot sleep, which seriously affects normal life JOA score [5] Subjective symptoms Clinical signs Limitation of daily activities e total score is 29 points, a higher score represents a better function Quality of life score [6] Cognitive Role Social Physical e total score is 100 points. A higher score represents a better life quality 5).…”

“…A recent animal study reported that reduced inflammation in the spinal cord was related to improved neuronal survival in the brain and neurological recovery ( Li et al, 2020 ). In a CSM study, Zhao et al (2022a) found that FA of posterior cervical spinal cord and FC of the somatosensory cortex were relevant. The present study showed that the FA value of FCG was negatively correlated with the paracentral lobule’s zALFF, and FA value of FCC was positively correlated with the caudate zALFF, while CSA of the CST was negatively correlated with the FC between right caudate nucleus and DMN in CSM patients.…”

“…Studies have shown that the ALB value of cerebrospinal fluid is increased in patients with CS. Measuring the ALB value can understand the degree of blood-brain barrier damage in patients [34] ; IL-6, IL-1β, and TNF-α play a role in the early degeneration of cervical discs, and the levels of IL-6, IL-1β, and TNF-α in cervical discs are significantly increased in patients with CS [35,36] ; TP53 is involved in the coordination of multiple cell effects and signal transduction, and inhibition of TP53 can promote the proliferation of human nucleus pulposus cells. [37][38][39] The KEGG function enrichment results showed that the targets were mainly concentrated in the cancer signaling pathway, Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpes virus infection, PI3K-Akt signaling pathway, lipid and atherosclerosis, and human T-cell leukemia type 1 virus infection.…”
