The correlation between caregiver burden with depression and quality of life among informal caregivers of hemodialysis and thalassemia patients during the COVID-19 pandemic: a cross-sectional study

Abstract: Background Lifelong provision of care to chronically ill patients increase the risk of physical and mental diseases in informal caregivers and adversely affects their quality of life. The present study examined the correlation between caregiver burden, depression, and quality of life among the informal caregivers of thalassemia and hemodialysis patients during the COVID-19 pandemic in southeastern Iran. Methods This cross-sectional correlational st… Show more

“…A similar discovery can be made regarding the consequences of extended care for chronic conditions: caregivers' fatigue and consequent decline in life satisfaction. 29 The upward trend in anxiety levels as individual's age, especially among those over 60, is consistent with the results reported by Maftei et al 30 who established the correlation between the progression of health problems and heightened health-related anxiety among older adults. The correlation between patient depression and caregiver burden is statistically significant, indicating that patient-caregiver dynamics are intertwined.…”

“…Spearman correlation analyses were utilized to examine the correlation between caregiver burden and continuous variables (three dimensions of social support, age of patients and informal caregivers, total medical cost, monthly caregiving and annual household income). Based on evidence from previous studies [ 15 , 31 , 32 ], we hypothesized that patients’ age, history of interruption of blood transfusion and iron chelation therapy, and social support, as well as informal caregivers’ age, marital status, monthly caregiving, and taking care of others would be potential predictors of caregiver burden. Therefore, they were included in multiple linear regression.…”

“…Given the Chinese tradition, caregivers are mostly family members, especially parents. These family members act as “informal caregivers”, which were defined as unpaid family members, friends or neighbors who provided free care to the patient [ 15 ]. Due to poor quality of life, adult patients with β-thalassemia rely heavily on their informal caregivers, resulting in a severe caregiving burden [ 16 ].…”
