The corpus luteum: an ovarian structure with maternal instincts and suicidal tendencies

Abstract: The corpus luteum is a unique hormone-regulated, transient reproductive gland that produces progesterone, a required product for the establishment and maintenance of early pregnancy. In the absence of pregnancy the corpus luteum will cease to produce progesterone and the structure itself will regress in size over time. Although the process of luteal regression has been studied for several decades, many of the regulatory mechanisms involved in loss of function and involution of the structure are incompletely un… Show more

“…It will be of interest to examine the effects of luteotrophic and luteolytic agents that are known to activate different luteal cell signalling pathways (Niswender 2002, Davis andRueda 2002) on the responsiveness of these induced CL, in vivo and in vitro, and thereby elucidate the cause of their reduced LH sensitivity.…”

“…It is generally accepted that apoptosis is the main type of cell death during structural luteolysis in many species (Davis and Rueda, 2002). Apoptosis is a highly regulated process and various factors are known to be involved in apoptosis in the corpus luteum (CL).…”

“…The corpora lutea (CL) are transient ovarian organs that play a pivotal role for the establishment and maintenance of pregnancy by secreting progesterone [5]. Bovine CL contains cells with different anatomical features and biological functions, in particular, it contains steroidogenic cells, called large and small luteal cells, originating from follicle granulosa and theca cells, respectively [1,2].…”
