The CORALIE survey for southern extrasolar planets

Abstract: Context. Since 1998, a planet-search program around main sequence stars within 50 pc in the southern hemisphere has been carried out with the CORALIE echelle spectrograph at La Silla Observatory. Aims. With an observing time span of more than 14 years, the CORALIE survey is now able to unveil Jovian planets on Jupiter's period domain. This growing period-interval coverage is important for building formation and migration models since observational constraints are still weak for periods beyond the ice line. Met… Show more

“…A long observing sequence allows either to average the activity signal down, to select parts of the sequence that are less affected, or to reveal additional companions that create the RV jitter. Long-term observational efforts using ELODIE/SOPHIE (Boisse et al 2012), Lick/Keck-HIRES (Fischer et al 2014), CORALIE (Marmier et al 2013), and HARPS (Lo Curto et al 2010;Mayor et al 2011) should thus be followed-up as long as the hardware and facilities exist and perform at a precision level of a few m s −1 .…”

“…This lead us to use our own parameters to establish the baseline for the whole catalogue. We note that in several cases, the parameters derived by our team have not been published in dedicated papers, but rather have been included in the discovery papers (for recent examples see Boisse et al 2012;Marmier et al 2013). The choice of this baseline methodology for the derivation of stellar parameters is anchored on the extremely good agreement with the values found by methods that are usually considered to be standard.…”

“…In spite of these challenges, a number of Jupiter analog candidates have been discovered from long-duration planet surveys (see, e.g., Vogt et al 2000;Naef et al 2003;Wright et al 2007Wright et al , 2008Howard et al 2010;Boisse et al 2012;Marmier et al 2013;Wittenmyer et al 2014;Feng et al 2015). These surveys also demonstrate the prevalence of solar-like magnetic activity cycles, which can manifest in the stellar RVs Zechmeister et al 2013).…”
